Before pruning or removing any trees, make sure to review Monash City Council’s tree laws. These rules apply to properties in suburbs including Ashwood, Chadstone, Glen Waverley, Hughesdale, Huntingdale, Mount Waverley, Mulgrave, Notting Hill, Oakleigh, Oakleigh East, Oakleigh South (part), and Wheelers Hill.
The City of Monash is home to a wide variety of trees, with many local species thriving in the area. Common examples include River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis), Yellow Box (Eucalyptus melliodora), various Stringybarks, and native wattles such as Silver Wattle (Acacia dealbata) and Lightwood (Acacia implexa). Smaller gardens often feature Silver Banksia (Banksia marginata) and Black Wattle (Acacia mearnsii). As more developments and apartment complexes emerge across Monash, the demand for professional tree pruning and stump removal has grown significantly, helping property owners manage tighter land boundaries and the pressures of an expanding property base.
When a Planning Permit is Required
If your property is located in a protected area, you will need a planning permit to remove or destroy vegetation that is taller than 10 metres and has a trunk circumference greater than 50 cm (or 16 cm in diameter) when measured 1.2 metres above ground level.
Planning Permit Exemptions
A permit is not required for the removal of dead vegetation, certain exempt species (including all types of willows, radiata/Monterey pines, evergreen alders, sweet pittosporums, and desert ash), or vegetation that poses an immediate risk to personal safety or property. In the case of risk, only the hazardous portion of the tree may be removed. Landowners are responsible for keeping records of any exempt vegetation removal, with supporting evidence such as photographs or written advice from a suitably qualified professional.
