Glen Eira City Council Tree Regulations

Check Tree Regulations Before You Start

Before pruning or removing any trees on your property, it is important to review Glen Eira City Council’s tree regulations to avoid potential fines or enforcement actions.

These rules apply to properties located in Bentleigh, Bentleigh East, Carnegie, Caulfield, Caulfield East, Caulfield North, Caulfield South, Elsternwick, Glen Huntly, McKinnon, Murrumbeena, Ormond, and parts of Brighton East, Gardenvale, and St Kilda East.

Common Trees in Glen Eira City

The London Plane tree (Platanus × acerifolia) is one of the most commonly planted trees by Glen Eira Council. Many homeowners also have gum trees in their gardens. With ongoing development and the construction of new apartments, the demand for professional tree pruning and stump removal has increased to accommodate tighter property boundaries and a growing residential base.

City of Glen Eira Council Tree Pruning And Removal Laws

Glen Eira does not have general tree laws that apply across the entire council. A permit is only required if your property is located within one of the following overlays:

  • Significant Landscape Overlay (SLO): Currently, this applies to only one site in Glen Eira at Omama Road, Murrumbeena. The SLO conserves and enhances the character of existing landscapes. A planning permit is required to remove, destroy, or lop a specified tree, or to carry out construction or works within designated tree protection zones.

  • Vegetation Protection Overlay (VPO): This overlay protects areas of significant vegetation, maintains and enhances habitats and habitat corridors, and encourages the regeneration of native vegetation. Key areas include Kitmont Street Reserve, Murrumbeena, and the southern end of Boyd Park, Murrumbeena. Swamp Gums and River Red Gums are specifically protected as part of Glen Eira’s remaining significant remnant indigenous plant community.

If your property does not fall under the SLO or VPO zones, you may remove or prune trees without requiring council permission..
